This is a known issue, and is listed in the KNOWN_ISSUES file:

Backup files redesign

The backup files for the signer are being redesigned for version
1.4.0. In this
first alpha release, the backup files are not read in correctly and will
be considered corrupted.

It should be fixed in trunk, and will be part of the soon to come alpha 2.
