Could you expand a little bit around this?
Have you tried, for example, to list the keys in your softHSM by running
ods-hsmutil under the opendnssec user?
Perhaps you are able to read the config file, but the sqlite file
containing the softhsm is not readable. Are you running Linux? Perhaps
the AppArmor is bothering you.
