Shutting down the signer took a few minutes and afterwards the crashed
sign process kept running. I terminated it manually and restarted the
signer. Minutes later all problems were solved.

Thanks for your help and the wonderfull OpenDNSSEC software.

I'm still interested in chasing this bug a little further. My system
is not yet in production so I'm not opposed to crazy experiments (to
intentionally trigger a race-condition).
