So I have added (r5396) shell quoting to the username and password.

I _believe_ that the quoting should look like:

'hello'\''s world'

Can anyone confirm if that is correct on a mac? It seemed to work when I 
tried it.

Once that is confirmed I'll patch the lot into the 1.3 branch.
