I don't know of any reason why not.

It should just expand to $ORIGIN, just like any other use of it.

In fact there's no other way to create a CNAME pointing to the current 
$ORIGIN without explicitly writing out its value.  If you have a zone file 
with an implicit $ORIGIN (i.e. because it was specified in the config file 
and not in the zone) that's essential.
