if I understood correctly, most files are rewritten by the communicator, even if
there are no changes, so there would be quite a bit of parsing involved (this is
just hearsay right now, so please correct me :) )

well, the engine has this already (plain text commands on tcp localhost:47806),
to which signer_engine_cli is just a front-end
