yes, although jakob has done some tremendous work on this, there is still room
for improvement; the big 'do-all' makefile currently has a few tricks that make
it work for gnu systems and bsd systems, but not solaris, which i myself added.
And personally i don't like having to edit a file to make something build (yeah
i'm also looking at you, mozilla), but both these issues could be fixed by
making a 'big' configure as well.
And while we're at it, perhaps we could see whether it is possible to fix the
dependency issues; make build does a lot of unnecessary work at the moment,
although it may very well not be possible to get it completely right; recursive
make and interdependencies are not always good friends.
